Métis Nation Legislative Assembly Gathering Strengthens Government to Government relations
November 27, 2023 – Treaty 6 Territory, the Heartland of the Métis, Saskatoon, SK – The 2023 Fall Métis Nation Legislative Assembly (MNLA) came to a conculsion after two days of focused collaboration on continuing to build a responsible government for our Nation. The MNLA opened in our way with recognition of our Métis culture, traditions, and protocols.
With a government of more than 100 elected leaders, representing Locals and Regions from across Saskatchewan, the Assembly continues to build on previous MNLA efforts to continue moving federal legislation for self-government forward, ensuring Métis rights are protected and understood at all levels of government and advancing our nation to nation relationships.
“We’ve been holding our Assembly since 1994 when we approved our first Constitution, and although our path may previously have been marked by instability, since 2018 we have come together and collectively course corrected the Métis Government of Saskatchewan,” said President McCalllum. “We have stopped dreaming in isolation and developed relationships through hard work. Our citizens deserve this, we have a responsibility to our ancestors and those generations to come.”
This weekend continued the unprecendent growth of the Métis Nation Government of Saskatchewan in addressing needs of Métis citizens, families, and communities across the province. Key announcements included a $7 million dollar community investment to support language revitalization and culture programming and landbased wellness programs directly to MN–S locals. This investment recognizes the crictial role Locals play and empowers them to connect citizens to the Métis government, culture, traditions, and with each other.
The Assembly also saw two MOUs between the MN–S and the Province of Saskatchewan signed by MN–S President McCallum and Priemier Scott Moe. These MOUs, to Educate the Public Service on Métis and collaborate on Firearms Safety Education, reflect ongoing commitments to work together, government to government, on shared issues.
“This was a pivotal MNLA for our government as we continue to see the fruits of our labour come to be. Just this week, Manitoba announced it would recognize Louis Riel as the honourary First Premier of Manitoba, and we carry on his legacy,” stated President Glen McCallum.
