“The beautiful skies, the blue skies and open spaces, these are very unique things that now I cannot live without.”

When Dr. Ibrahim Khan was a teenager in Pakistan, he saw a message from fate on a television screen.

The country’s national television station was carrying Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, an American serial about a female doctor from Boston who moves to Colorado Springs in search of a new life. What Khan remembered the most was the titular character’s passion for providing health care to those who didn’t have it, particularly Indigenous peoples.

“That series was so engraved in my mind as a teenager,” Khan says.

Three decades later, he is Indigenous Services Canada’s regional medical health officer for Saskatchewan First Nations. The show was perhaps a sign from God, he jokes.
