SASKATOON, SK, Oct. 1, 2025 – For the second year in a row, the Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed October as Health Literacy Month. The proclamation, announced by Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill, reinforces the importance of equitable access to health information and services across the province.

This year’s proclamation coincides with the release of the 2025 Health Literacy Report, a comprehensive study conducted by Saskatchewan Blue Cross to better understand the state of Health Literacy in the province. The report reveals that two in three Saskatchewan residents struggle with Health Literacy and three in four overestimate their ability to understand and act on health information.

“Health Literacy is not a luxury but a necessity,” said Kelly Wilson, President and CEO of Saskatchewan Blue Cross. “This year’s report is a call to action. It highlights the real barriers people face when navigating their health journey and underscores the need for community led, culturally safe and accessible solutions. We are committed to working alongside our partners to close these gaps and empower every person in Saskatchewan to live a healthier life.”

Health Literacy refers to the ability to obtain, understand and act on health information to make informed decisions. The report identifies key populations in need of support, including Newcomers to Canada, Indigenous communities, youth, seniors and those with lower socioeconomic status. It also outlines opportunities for collective action, such as expanding virtual care access, improving navigation support and promoting trustworthy health information.

Saskatchewan Blue Cross continues to invest in organizations that advance Health Literacy through education, outreach and culturally relevant programming. The renewed proclamation from the Government of Saskatchewan is a meaningful recognition of these efforts and the importance of Health Literacy in building a healthier, more informed province.
