Today, Premier Scott Moe announced that Saskatchewan’s 23rd Lieutenant Governor, Russ Mirasty, will be formally installed during a ceremony at the Legislative Building on Thursday, September 12.

“It has been an honour to work with Mr. Mirasty since he was sworn in as Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant Governor in July,” Moe said.  “Mr. Mirasty’s rich background and deep connection to our province has already brought a valuable perspective to the role.  I look forward to the installation ceremony of Mr. Mirasty in the Legislative Assembly next week.”

Mirasty was born and raised in La Ronge and is a member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band.  He speaks Cree fluently, and is Saskatchewan’s first Indigenous Lieutenant Governor.  In 1976, he joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and served in a variety of roles across Canada until his retirement in 2013.  He was appointed the Commanding Officer for ‘F’ Division (Saskatchewan) at the rank of Assistant Commissioner in 2010.  In this role, he was the first First Nations person to be appointed as the head of the RCMP for a province.

While Mirasty was sworn in at a small ceremony at Government House to fulfill his constitutional duties as the Queen’s representative in Saskatchewan, this ceremony will complete the traditional events of a Lieutenant Governor’s installation.  It will include his investiture as the Chancellor of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, and will give the opportunity for Mirasty to share with the people of Saskatchewan some of his priorities for his mandate.  Under the Canadian constitution, he will serve as Lieutenant Governor for a minimum of five years.

Mirasty was appointed by the federal government to replace W. Thomas Molloy, who passed away on July 2, 2019.
