Senators in Saskatoon told Bill C-69 misses the mark – 620

There was a clear and consistent message to the Senate hearing on Bill C-69 in Saskatoon.
Witnesses described the regulatory legislation for major infrastructure projects like pipelines as too complicated and misses the mark on protecting the environment.

In addition to detailing the significantly impeding elements of the bill for developers, a consultant for the Indigenous oil and gas industry called Bill C-69 misguided, paternalistic and outdated.

Brian Schmidt said it seems the bill was drafted with the misconception that First Nations need to be protected from resource industry development.

Schmidt testified Indigenous oil and gas workers will be the first to be hurt by the bill.
He claimed Indigenous employees are the first to be laid off and the last to be called back when times are tough and Indigenous oil and gas employees are higher paid than counterparts in other sectors of the job market.
