New director of School of Public Health excited to solve problems – StarPhoenix

Some of the greatest challenges facing society during the next 50 to 100 years will revolve around public health, says the incoming executive director of the School of Public Health at the University of Saskatchewan.

One study predicts the global cost of obesity as $2 trillion and rising, Steven Michael Jones said in an interview.

“Public health has to engage with people in order to help solve those problems because the knock-on effect is increasing costs for health care, which at some point become unsustainable.”

Jones had been wanting to return to academic work from the private sector when the position opened up, and his daughter attends Western College of Veterinary Medicine and was impressed with the school, he said.
