Looking to re-establish the local Metis community, a rendezvous was held this weekend in Moose Jaw bring folks from across southern Saskatchewan. The focus of the event was to socialize and re-connect over cultural activities like beadwork, traditional cooking and living while also learning about the Michif language.
New Southern Plains Metis Local 160 President Laverne Trudel is hoping to have regular events to try and pass on their culture.
“It’s to spread the Metis culture and the rich history that the Metis had,” explained Trudel during a break at the event.
“Our motto is ‘Reach, Teach and Unite’ but a lot of people don’t really understand that there is a Metis Local back here in this community of Moose Jaw.”
