School kids urge respect for teepees

We are a Grade 5 class at Wascana Plains School here in Regina. We saw the article Two teepees slashed in front of First Nations University of Canada from April 8. We were furious, upset and sad to read that the teepees were vandalized.

Our class was at FNUC last Thursday, learning more about the Indigenous culture. This year, we have spent a lot of time learning about Indigenous People and their culture and style of living.

We have taken part in the Blanket Exercise and the process of smudging, from gathering sage, to bundling it, to cleaning it. We enjoyed a performance by Supaman from the U.S., and we’ve learned Cree from Elder Jane Carriere. We’ve read books, and we often talk about Indigenous culture. Because of all of this, we realize how important teepees are to Indigenous People.
