Dozens of birds, fish among victims of Husky oil spill – Starphoenix
August 23, 2016
The number of animals that have died in the wake of the Husky Energy oil spill has climbed to 141.
As of Tuesday, the toll included 50 small mammals, 37 fish, 30 waterfowl, 13 crustaceans, 10 birds and a reptile. Another 15 animals — mostly small mammals — are being treated for injuries caused by the spill and 17 have been released after recovering.
Injured and dead animals have been pulled from the North Saskatchewan River since late July, when a Husky pipeline near Maidstone failed and sent more than 200,000 litres of oil into the river. The cause of the pipeline failure is under investigation and more information is expected to be made public this fall.
