City of Regina receives funding from CN EcoConnexions – From the Ground Up program.Grant to support local planting project at Pilot Butte Creek Pathway

Regina, October 4 – The City of Regina received a matching grant of $25,000 to implement a CN EcoConnexions From the Ground Up project. These grants are a part of the CN and Tree Canada initiative that invests in community greening projects across Canada. More than 140 applications received from Canadian communities of all types and sizes.

City Councillor, Lori Bresciani was joined by D’Arcy Schenk from Tree Canada and Robin Speer from CN to announce the grant and explain the importance of adding 370 new trees to Regina’s urban forest. Grade two and three students from Wilfred Hunt School also attended to learn about forestry, soils and ecosystems and help plant some of the new trees, which included species of elm, birch, maple, pine, poplar, larch and spruce. These trees will benefit the community in many ways by adding shade, attracting wildlife and creating a more attractive pathway.

“Adding a beautiful tree line along this multi-use pathway will no doubt enhance the experience of walkers, joggers and cyclists” said Mayor Michael Fougere. “Not only will it add to diversifying our urban forest, it helps fulfill our commitment of “one tree per citizen planted on public land” as stated in Design Regina: The Official Community Plan. A sincere thank you to Tree Canada and CN for this generous grant and working with us to plant 370 trees.”

The project will be carried out by Certified Arborists from the City’s Forestry Branch. Approximately 130 trees will be planted this year, and 80 trees yearly over the next three years until the project is complete – for a total of 370 trees.
