The City of Regina is proud to participate, with many local organizations and individuals, in commemorating the annual “Orange Shirt Day”, recognized this year on September 28.

Since the spring of 2013, Orange Shirt Day has become a legacy event, based on Phyllis Webstad, who at the age of six, was excited to wear a brand-new orange shirt on her first day of Mission school. However, her orange shirt was taken away, leaving Phyllis to feel that no one cared and that her feelings didn’t matter. The annual commemoration of this event has become an opportunity to remind Canadians of the importance of healing and reconciliation and that every child matters.

“Reconciliation is a priority for the City of Regina. Through Reconciliation Regina, we are committed to continue the dialogue and healing process and to plan and create a Community Action Plan that reflects resilience, healing and respect for the betterment of our community. Participating in Orange Shirt Day further demonstrates our commitment to promote truth and reconciliation,” said Mayor Michael Fougere.

“Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for the community to reflect on how Phyllis at six-years old would feel when her shirt was taken away. It is important that we raise the awareness and understanding of residential schools to promote a stronger and more inclusive community,” added Chris Holden, City Manager.
