REGINA – Officials from Canada’s four western provinces gather next week to discuss standardized rules to govern trucking.
Truck safety has been in the spotlight since the April crash that killed 16 people on the Humboldt Broncos hockey team bus and injured 13 others.
The driver of the truck faces 16 counts of dangerous driving causing death and 13 counts of dangerous driving causing bodily injury.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says he hopes any rule changes that are agreed upon will be brought in soon.
After the crash Saskatchewan’s Crown insurance company, S-G-I, said a mandatory driver training plan should be in place by next year.
Ontario is the only province that has mandatory truck driver training.
Alberta has announced it’s making driver training for new commercial truckers mandatory as early as next January.
Joe Hargrave, minister responsible for S-G-I, says half of all truck accidents in Saskatchewan between 2014 and 2016 involved drivers from out of province.
Hargrave says the western provinces aim to have an announcement by early fall.
