The Mines Health, Safety and Enforcement Division (MHSED) regulates the BC mining industry. The main points of focus for the Health and Safety Group are to ensure the health and safety of workers and public during the mineral exploration, mine development and closure of BC’s mineral resources.
The Director, Health and Safety: Major Mines is the ministry’s professional on mine health and safety for ensuring compliance and enforcement of health and safety under the delegated authority of the Mines Act and the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines (HSR) in British Columbia. The position is responsible for health and safety investigations, oversees the Senior Inspectors of Mines – Health and Safety, enforces actions for health and safety non-compliance, provides expert advice and contributes to operational policy and program development.

In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering or related field. Preference may be given to candidates with a Master’s Degree or higher. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
- Preference may be given to those who are registered or immediately eligible* for registration as a fully licensed Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (The Association of Engineers and Geoscientists BC). *Immediately eligible means you are currently a fully licensed Professional Engineer in another Canadian jurisdiction and can be immediately transferred to Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
- A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in the mining operations or mine regulatory field. Preference may be given to candidates with greater than 10 years of experience.
- A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible supervisory experience in the mining industry relevant to the fields of Health and Safety systems. Preference may be given to candidates with ten (10) or more years of experience in this area.
- Experience solving complex technical problems, interpreting and analyzing data related to mine health and safety management.
- Experience in investigations, construction of mines or related works and other aspects of mine health and safety hazard management.
- Preference may be given to candidates with experience in Regulatory Compliance and Enforcement or Industry related Health and Safety Practices.
